HERE'S THE STORY ON BLUE LIGHT

You probably know about UV rays, but what about blue light? When you hear "blue light," you may think of electronic devices and digital screens, but that's only part of the story.

WHAT IS BLUE LIGHT?

Light itself is composed of non-visible and visible light. UV light is an example of non-visible light that is emitted from the sun.

Visible light, on the other hand, is light our eyes see as colors - violet, indigo, red, green, yellow, orange, and blue light.

Blue light appears as a range of colors from blue-turquoise to blue-violet light.

IS BLUE LIGHT HARMFUL?

In small amounts, the blue-turquoise range of the light spectrum can actually have some beneficial effects on your overall health, helping to regulate your sleep/wake cycle.

But blue-violet light can be harmful to our eyes and can cause eyestrain and fatigue. Over-exposure to harmful blue light, especially outside in the sun and through constant use of electronic devices and screens, is why protecting your vision has never been more important.

WHERE IS HARMFUL BLUE LIGHT FOUND?

Harmful blue light is everywhere. It is found indoors and outdoors from sources such electronic devices and the sun (blue light emitted by the sun is why the sky appears blue). In fact, you can be exposed 100X to 500X the intensity of harmful blue light outdoors than with digital devices.

Outdoors, we're exposed to high-intensity harmful blue light from the sun. (Squinting is our body's natural defense against harsh light and bright glare.) Indoors, we're exposed to harmful blue light from our screens, LED displays, and digital devices.
